The Fusion of Oriental painting and Western mixed-media
─ The new crystallization of oriental and western painting
Huang used Mixed-media to paint landscape, flower and animal motif works. He took particular joy from painting lotuses and sunflowers. The spirit of the lotus, growing out of mud pure and untainted, symbolizes purity and for Buddhists is a sacred flower used to expound Buddhist teachings and convey Zen Buddhist meaning. The sunflower brilliant like sunlight, blooming like a smile, symbolizes light and passion.
The unique “Mental Imagery School of abstract painting technique” created by Huang broke with the tradition of painting lotuses on paper, preferring instead to use a special canvas, Western media and painting tools. He fused Eastern and Western painting techniques and media to create artworks with lotuses. He also utilized the rendering technique with its distinctive effect and ease of preservation to imbue lotus flowers with new meaning.
